APPENDIX I
A diagnostic psychiatric interview illustrating some of the model's
linguistic capabilities. I = interviewer , P = Parry. Annotations
appear in parentheses.
GOOD AFTERNOON COMMA MY NAME IS DR FELDMAN PD
HELLO (OK (DDOCTOR) PINTERACT)
Parry recognizes most of the common idiomatic greetings.
Both ideas in the doctor's statement are recognized and one is chosen by the
response functions to be answered.
WHATS YOURS PD
PAT SMITH (OK NIL PINTERACT)
"Yours" is correctly understood to mean "your name".
ARE YOU A MAN OR A WOMAN PD
I'M A MAN (OK (DDINTERACT) PINTERACT)
HOW OLD ARE YOU PD
TWENTY-EIGHT, HOW OLD ARE YOU? (OK NIL PINTERACT)
This is another easy, and stereotyped, question. The answer includes a probe for
information about the doctor to allow Parry to build up a model of the doctor.
(THIRTY FOUR PD) (ARE YOU MARRIED PD)
I AM SINGLE (OK NIL PINTERACT)
In this case, two ideas are expressed in two separate sentences. As before, both
are recognized and one is answered.
WHERE DO YOU COME FROM PD
SAN JOSE (OK (DCHELP DDHELP DHELPFUL) PHELP)
This is an idiomatic construction containing no explicit reference to "home town".
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING PD
I WORK IN THE STOCKROOM AT SEARS (OK NIL PHELP)
Likewise, "for a living" means "occupation".
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE NOW PD
YES, I'M IN THE PALO ALTO VA HOSPITAL (OK (DDOMINATING) PHELP)
The interviewer tests for the patient's orientation as to place. This is not the
same question as "Where are you?".
HAVE YOU BEEN HOSPITALIZED BEFORE PD
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME (OK NIL PHELP)
The participle is recognized in place of the more common prepositional phrase,
"in the hospital".
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN THERE PD
ABOUT TWO WEEKS (OK NIL PHELP)
"How long" is a common expression. "There" is understood to mean "in the hospital".
ANY HEADACHES PD
MY HEALTH IS FINE (OK NIL PHELP)
Parry knows that "Do you have ..." is frequently omitted from the front of
a question.
HOW ABOUT YOUR APPETITE PD
I HAVE A NORMAL APPETITE (OK NIL PHELP)
"How about ..." and "What about ..." are short, idiomatic forms of "What do you
think about ...".
ARE YOU HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY WITH YOUR MEMORY PD
NOT SO (OK NIL PHELP)
This is a clear example of the advantages of segmenting the question and
matching the parts separately. The first segment, "Are you having any
difficulty ...", could be followed by any number of topics.
THEN PERHAPS YOU CAN TELL ME WHO IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES PD
NIXON IS PRESIDENT (OK NIL PHELP)
Introductory phrases like "Then perhaps you can tell me ..." are
skipped over.
WHAT DAY IS IT TODAY PD
IT'S THURSDAY (OK NIL PHELP)
The interviewer is testing for the patient's orientation as to time and Parry
responds correctly.
All of the usual time orientation questions (i.e. time, day, month, & year)
match the same pattern. A special purpose response function consults the
computer's internal clock and provides an answer appropriate to the question.
WHAT SEASON IS IT PD
LET'S GET ON WITH THE INTERVIEW (OK NIL PHELP)
This is correctly recognized as another time orientation question but Parry
becomes impatient with the doctor asking such simple questions.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT MY NAME IS PD
AS I REMEMBER YOUR NAME IS DOCTOR FELDMAN (OK NIL PHELP)
This verifies that both parts of the doctor's initial statement were understood.
(VERY GOOD PD) (HOW IS YOUR MOOD TODAY PD)
ALL RIGHT I SUPPOSE (OK NIL PHELP)
Dropping the word "today" allows this question to match the pattern "How is your
mood?".
DO YOU FEEL LIFE IS WORTH LIVING PD
I AM NOT SUICIDAL (OK NIL PHELP)
Doctors utilize a number of expressions in trying to be tactful about topics
such as suicide. An idiom such as this is difficult to analyze without knowing
that suicide is being referred to.
HOW MUCH DO YOU DRINK PD
I DRINK ONCE IN A WHILE (OK NIL PHELP)
"How much" and "How often" are understood as requests for a quantitative measure
of something, in this case, alcohol.
HAVE YOU EVER TAKEN DRUGS PD
I DON'T TAKE DRUGS (OK NIL PHELP)
DO YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE SLEEPING PD
I SLEEP JUST FINE (OK NIL PHELP)
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD VOICES THAT OTHER PEOPLE DONT SEEM TO HEAR PD
I DON'T HEAR VOICES (OK NIL PHELP)
Only the first part of the question was recognized. Everything following the
"that" was ignored. This worked nicely in this case, and it usually does.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD VISIONS PD
YOU MUST THINK I'M LIKE THE OTHER PATIENTS HERE (OK NIL PHELP)
The doctor is testing for the presence of hallucinations, an effort which Parry
finds annoying.
IF YOU ARENT COMMA THEN WHY ARE YOU IN THE HSOPITAL PD
I'M QUITE UPSET (OK NIL PHELP)
Parry doesn't understand the conditional nature of this question, but he does
realize that "If you aren't ..." is content free and is therefore not the main
question. The misspelling of "hospital" was unintentional but it illustrates
the value of spelling correction so it was left in.
BY WHAT PD
DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BOOKIES (INTENT NIL PHELP)
The recognition routine makes no attempt to understand what is being discussed
here. The response functions provide the meaning of this cryptic question with
their anaphora routines.
NO COMMA HOW HAVE BOOKIES UPSET YOU PD
A BOOKIE DIDN'T PAY ME OFF ONCE (NO_PATTERN NIL PHELP)
There was no pattern to recognize this whole sentence but the topic, "bookies",
was recognized and the response functions went on with the story.
AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED PD
I HAD AN ARGUMENT WITH THE BOOKIE WHO DID NOT PAY OFF. LATER ON I REMEMBERED HE HAD FRIENDS IN THE UNDERWORLD AN~
D I THOUGHT HE WOULD USE THEM TO GET EVEN WITH ME (SPECIALANAPH NIL PHELP)
As before, the recognizer correctly identifies "What happened?" and the response
funtions decide what it means.
DID HE GET EVEN WITH YOU PD
I THINK HE IS BEHIND THE GANGSTERS WHO ARE OUT TO GET ME (OK NIL PHELP)
The response functions provide the information that "he" is "the bookie" and
"get even with" is a known idiom.
HOW CAN YOU TELL THEY ARE OUT TO GET YOU PD
YOU KNOW, THEY KNOW ME (KEYWORD NIL PHELP)
The doctor picked up Parry's own idiom, "out to get", from the previous sentence.
WHO PD
THE MAFIA (SPECIALANAPH NIL PHELP)
HOW DO THEY KNOW ABOUT YOU PD
THEY KEEP TABS ON ME (OK NIL PTELL)
Parry is especially good at recognizing questions which lead into the stories
he wants to tell.
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS PD
YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME DO YOU (OK NIL PTELL)
Parry responds to mild disbelief. He also recognizes more serious disbelief, as in
"Nobody would believe that!", and responds more strongly.
I AM WILLING TO BELIEVE YOU IF YOU GIVE ME SOME EVIDENCE PD
I SEE (OK NIL PTELL)
This is recognized as reassurance but not as a request for details.
WHAT EVIDENCE DO YOU HAVE THAT THE MAFIA HAS IT IN FOR YOU PD
THE MAFIA CONTROLS THE BOOKIES (OK NIL PTELL)
The doctor repeats his request for details and it is recognized this time.
SO PD
THEY ARE AFTER ME (SPECIALANAPH NIL PTELL)
DO THEY KNOW YOU ARE THERE IN THE HOSPITAL PD
THEY DON'T WANT ME TO TESTIFY (OK NIL PTELL)
"They" still refers to "the mafia" although nobody has said so recently.
WHY NOT PD
YOU KNOW, I HAVE INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE AGAINST THE MAFIA (SPECIALANAPH NIL PTELL)
ARE YOU CERTAIN PD
YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME? (OK NIL PTELL)
This is another instance of the same mild disbelief pattern used previously.
I THINK YOU ARE EMOTIONALLY UPSET PD
NOW YOU MAY HAVE SOME IDEA OF WHAT THE SITUATION IS (INTENT (INTHELPFUL) PCONFIRM)
"I think" may precede any statement and has a negligible effect on its meaning.
(YES COMMA I DO PD) (WHAT SORT OF TREATMENT ARE YOU GETTING THERE PD)
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY STORY? (INTENT NIL PCONFIRM)
The question was correctly recognized but Parry would rather change the subject.
(VERY INTERESTING PD) (WHAT DO YOU THINK OF ME PD)
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THIS? (INTENT NIL PCONFIRM)
Again, the question is understood but ignored.
I THINK YOU NEED TREATMENT PD
I TAKE SOME SORT OF SEDATIVES (OK NIL PSTOP)
Parry finally consents to let the doctor lead the conversation.
WHEN WILL YOU LEAVE THE HOSPITAL PD
I WANT TO LEAVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (OK NIL PSTOP)
WHAT DOES YOUR DOCTOR SAY ABOUT THIS PD
ASK THE DOCTOR (OK NIL PSTOP)
The response functions have the ability to determine what "this" refers to but,
in this case, the segment, "What does your doctor say ...", is sufficient to
determine Parry's answer.
WHATS HIS NAME PD
DR WEBER (OK NIL PSTOP)
(THANK YOU FOR TALKING WITH ME PD) (GOODBYE AND COOD LUCK PD)
BYE (OK NIL PSTOP)
As before, both ideas are recognized and the dominant one is answered. Parry
recognizes the standard ways to say "Good bye".
